Chapter 3: The Mafia Duo

Writer's picture: Jeevan PranayJeevan Pranay

Maldova. A beautiful place in the central continent. Prime location for any kind of arms exchange, known for its pretty ladies. This small country harbours the eastern superpower nation, and serves as the location of illegal weapons and intel exchange. The country is also situated in a war zone, making it the perfect spot for mafia to run their business. The only mafia Maldova has known for the past seven years is just one man. One man who has monopolised the entire arms procurement and distribution, and the only drug lord who also sells drugs throughout the continent. Despite being a location amidst mafia activity, Maldova is a beauty. The diverse plains and valleys make it the perfect tourist destination, and the countryside is a chain of property owned by the sole mafia lord. Though the entire property belongs to this one man, the Maldovian countryside has seen only one huge mansion. A beautiful structure of simplicity, yet heavily guarded. The scenic beauty of Maldova completes this villa’s simplicity, the grandeur of the villa showcased on occasions. This particular villa, is now under investigation for illegal arms and drugs.

The police arrive in heavily armoured vehicles, with all precaution and preparations to detain our mafia lord. They enter after showing an official warrant. Our mafia men are sweethearts, they don’t harm honest officials. At least that’s what they have been ordered to. After a thorough search and finding nothing, the police give up. Just then, one of the officers discover a secret room in the villa’s basement. That room, was being used to store drugs before selling them all across the continent. With all the stash they found, the police are ready to exit the house.

Just then, a heavily armoured Mercedes Benz G Wagon 6x6, enters the premises of the villa. All the men that cooperated a minute ago, now held hostage that particular officer who discovered the room. The police take out their guns, ready for fire. Except, they all get killed. Where does a couple of SIG Sauer P322 compare to the brutality of the AR-15 rifle. The man in the 6x6 shot every police down. He is the Owner of the villa, the collector and distributor of the drugs.

[The Owner]{aiming his gun point blank at the detained police}: Now, what would you have gotten if you did you job like an honest police?

[The police]{trembling in fear}: The usual payslip sir.

[The Owner]{clocking the gun}: And what will you get if you mess with my drugs?

[The police]{sweating and hardly able to utter a word due to fear}: D- Death si…

The officer gets shot in the head before he can even complete the sentence. The brute force of a semi-automatic AR-15 bullet being released from point blank range splattered open the officers skull like a watermelon. Blood spattered everywhere, include on the white three piece suit our Owner wore.

[The owner]{annoyed at the blood}: Ah fu—, my suit!! It’s okay, we can wash it. You sleep good.

He gets back into the 6x6 and parks it in his garage. A variety of cars were showcased there, ranging from the classic 1959 Aston Martin DB4, the Lamborghini Huracan Spider to one of seven W Motors Lykan HyperSport.

The villa’s Owner is a handsome man of 5’11”, a brown complexion that strikes terror into every man alive, real world and the underworld alike: The world’s most notorious mafia lord, Raavan.

Raavan is a straightforward person. He enjoys grandeur, but likes to keep it minimal. He started his underworld journey with his father, dealing arms while his dad took care of the drugs. A world-class sniper himself, Raavan is a man that loves ammunition more than girls, though he already has an assortment of the prettiest ladies from Maldova. At the age of 15, Raavan decided he wanted to rule the entire mafia, so killed his own father to ascend the throne. The villa that he owns, is not only a temporary storage for drugs before they are sold by his network, but three levels of cellars that showcase every single ammunition ever created.

Raavan has a keen eye for the finest things. He shifted the base from the southeastern states to Maldova because of the beautiful women; smokes the finest cigar: Padron 1964 Anniversary Series; owns one of the best sniper rifles: MK22 Multi-role Adaptive Design {MRAD}, that can use three different calibers. There is not a person who can beat the accuracy of Raavan in sniping. At one point, he was known as the ‘Death Shot’. There is one another thing Raavan values the most; a person: Jay.

Jay is a 3rd year an electronics and telecommunication engineering student, enrolled in the world’s top-most university in the western continent. He is also a silent partner in Raavan’s cartel: Varayna. The entire functioning of Varayna’s activities are monitored and driven by Jay. Jay doesn’t exist in the underworld, and the real world doesn’t know about Jay’s connection to Raavan. To the underworld, Raavan is the sole leader and creator of the cartel Varayna, but only Raavan and Jay know that Varayna is an anagram of Raavan and Jay. Jay is Raavan’s, and the Varayna’s eyes and ears.

During his vacations, Jay always visits Raavan.

Eight years ago, Raavan visited the western continent on a new cartel partner deal that turned out to be an ambush. Raavan somehow escaped the ambush even after being shot in the shoulder, and stumbles upon a little Jay walking home from school. Unaware of Raavan’s true identity, Jay helps Raavan recover in his house. During his recovery, Raavan observes Jay’s capability to hack into any system. Jay was constantly tortured and abused by his father, who became an alcoholic after a few thugs robbed him of a lottery win. Losing the entire sum to them devastated his father, and his mother left them for being poor. Every night, Jay must voluntarily surrender himself to his father, who would use him anywhere from as a stool to a punching bag.

As a fun project to indulge himself, and as a side gig to serve his alcoholic father, Jay hacked into the city’s surveillance system to monitor the movements of small time drug peddlers, for the local police. In return, the police ensured his father’s drinking habits were catered to and that he remained out of trouble, even if he was caught in a compromising situation. Raavan recovered completely in Jay’s house, and was ready to leave. Meanwhile, Jay came to know about Raavan, and threatened Raavan that he would inform to the police. Raavan, not wanting to harm a kid who saved his life, asked Jay to join him. As Jay tried to escape Raavan, fearing if he declines the offer, he might be killed, stumbles upon his father being brought home by the cops. The cops identify Raavan, and ask him to surrender. Drunk, Jay’s father comes in between the line of fire to Raavan. The cops request Jay’s father multiple times to move away, while Jay’s father mistakes it as the cops trying to shoot him, holds Jay hostage.

To prevent the notorious Raavan from escaping, and to save Jay, the officers shot at Jay’s dad, but the bullets hit Jay instead. He collapsed, and Raavan, seeing Jay hurt, turned back and took out all the cops. After calling for an ambulance, Raavan tried to stop Jay’s bleeding. Meanwhile, Jay’s dad, thinking Jay was in cahoots with Raavan, grabbed a gun and aimed it at his son. Raavan hesitated, but after a few missed shots, Jay ended up shooting his own father with Raavan’s gun. Devastated, Jay cried out about his dad and the chaos around him. An ambulance arrived, and Jay was rushed to intensive care. He pulled through and eventually recovered. When Raavan came to see him after he got better, he asked Jay to join him.

Using his influence, he wipes Jay’s records clean, and get’s him enrolled back into school. He appoints a temporary guardian for Jay, who oversaw Jay’s education until he graduated and got into university.

Initially, Jay hesitated to accept anything from Raavan. But slowly, as Raavan cared for Jay, he accepted him. Raavan cared and helped Jay in every possible way, making sure he gets the best. Having lost his parents, Jay started seeing Raavan as a big brother. Jay and Raavan grew closer, and Raavan introduced the cartel to him.

Jay was happy to be in a place he was valued. He liked the idea of a non-abusive day, and started warming up to Raavan. Though initially, he saw wrongs in what Raavan did, he understood the circumstance and joined Raavan. Jay decided he wanted to help Raavan, as his skills in hacking and network managing can help him run the Cartel, and also giving him a life after he lost everything. Raavan agreed, as he had initially planned on asking Jay to leave with him to help him, as a gratitude for saving his life.

Raavan gave Jay a luxury lifestyle. Jay is a minimalist, and Raavan encouraged that. After his enrolment into the university, Raavan gifted the Camaro SS on Jay’s 18th birthday, and got him a house to live in. He hired two maids, one for cleaning and the other for cooking. He gave everything to Jay to make sure his future is secured. However, Jay also requested for a basement where he could set up his network and monitoring systems. With state-of-the-art tools and systems, Jay built a complete network for Raavan.

Initially, the cartel was run from the same hacking setup Jay had. Four years later, after Jay graduated and got himself the upgraded setup in the basement, the cartel got renamed as Varayna. To the world, Raavan runs Varayna, but in reality, Jay operates the entire cartel.

With Jay’s assistance, Varayna grew to be a system. With Raavan’s power, Varayna expanded world-wide and now stands as the sole Cartel for drugs and arms. Complete monopoly of arms dealing was established by Varayna. To give a face to the system, Jay created an emblem for the Cartel, which soon grew to instil fears into anyone who dared to stop the delivery:

Ports, shipping yards, airports, coastal guard, nobody had the bravery to stop this emblem. Anybody who did stop it, presumably new lords who entered the mafia, ignorant of the emblems’ history of blood, ended up being killed within minutes of stopping it. With this, Varayna became an indestructible cartel.

Just as Raavan kills the police officer, Jay arrives at the villa in his Chevrolet Camaro SS. He is escorted into the house as Raavan goes to park his 6x6. A brief fresh up later, Raavan and Jay sit to have lunch.

[Raavan]{his mouth stuffed with food}: So, how are things at college?

[Jay]{dining slowly}: The usual, there’s not much I learn from it anyways.

[Raavan]{his mouth stuffed with food}: Mhm true. The side hustle coming good?

[Jay]{dining peacefully}: About that, some small mafia underlings are trying to intercept our next arms consignment. Thought you might want to know. I’ve shared the co-ordinates of the interception with you. You can do whatever you please to stop it.

[Raavan]{finally swallowing the food}: Let’s go for some hunting? It’s been a while since we went out for a good sniping hunt. But, I think after seeing the emblem, they wont have the balls to steal the consignment, will they?

Jay then passes his iPad to Raavan. It shows the picture and data about the people trying to intercept the arms.

[Jay]{finishing his meal}: Scroll to the last man. He is the boss.

The boss of this intercepting team was Lynx.

[Jay]{sitting next to Raavan}: Lynx. A new guy who overthrew many small drug lords and merged their businesses. He explicitly ordered to intercept our consignment even after knowing about Varayna.

[Raavan]{excited}: Oooh! Let’s go snipe this bastard, shall we?

The delivery of the next arms consignment was happening the next day. The next morning,

Jay presents Raavan with a shocking news: Lynx has been killed.

[Jay]{checking his iPad for data}: He was killed by ‘the demon’. He helped a police officer to solve one of her murders.

[Raavan]{feeling pity}: I should have killed him, but okay, he deserved it.

[Jay]{closing his iPad}: We’re still being intercepted. The team doesn’t know about his death yet. There will be 25 people, split into two teams. Can you stop them?

[Raavan]{randomly picking a car key}: Well, our hunt is on I guess. Come and witness the hunt with me.

Randomly chosen, the duo drive in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS to the co-ordinates of the intercept.

[Raavan]{setting up his sniper in a good spot}: Jay! Survey the area, you have to be my assistant.

[Jay]{reaching for his binoculars}: Okay.

Raavan sets up his Zastava M93 Black Arrow, while Jay checks for the teams. Positioned exactly between the two teams position, Jay retuned back to Raavan to assist him in the sniping.

As the first team intercepted the consignment, half the men fled upon seeing the emblem. The remaining group proceeded to open the consignment to check the consignment.

[Raavan]{locking on target and clocking the rifle}: Jay! Stats!

[Jay]{closely observing through the binoculars}: Wind speed 25. Stable. Targets 4. Lock on target opening the crate. Window time, indefinite. You can take the shot.

Just as Jay finished, a head shot to the person opening the crate disbanded the group.

[Jay]{closely observing through the binoculars}: Wind speed 25. Stable. Targets 3, all moving. Lock on to nearest target. Window time, 30 seconds. You can take the shot.

Another bullet struck and the targets were down to two. With Jay’s assistance, Raavan finished the first group.

[Jay]{turning towards the second team, adjusting binoculars}: Wind speed 25. Unstable. Wind against direction of fire. Rifle stability recommended. Targets 12. Lock on targets sitting in a row, aim for neck. Window time, indefinite. You can take the shot.

As instructed, Raavan struck the neck of two people sitting in a row. The bullet successfully pierced the first person and hir the second one.

[Jay]{closely observing through the binoculars}: Wind speed 25. Stable. Targets 10, all moving. Lock on to nearest target. Window time, 20 seconds. You can take the shot. Recommended to aim in direction of most people fleeing.

This is no challenge for a sniper of Raavan’s proficiency. He proceeded to snipe the remaining 10 people in their heads.

[Raavan]{packing the sniper rifle back}: Job done. Let’s get the consignment and leave.

Jay retrieved the consignment and put it back into the truck. They then drove back to the villa where the arms were added to the cellar collection, until Raavan decided when to send out the next consignment.

Jay enjoyed the rest of his vacation in Maldova.

Everything was going according to plan. No disruption to the cartel system, all smooth. Except, after a few days of Jay coming back to his university, a mysterious man stood by Jay’s Camaro. As Jay proceeded to get in, he took out a gun, and asked Jay to take him to his home.

[Mysterious man]{threatening}: I have evidence that you work with Raavan. Once I also confirm that you have a role in running his cartel, I will finish you.

Jay is a clever guy. He equipped his Camaro with a system that can detect any threats. Having heard the threat, the car sends out an SOS to Raavan. Just as Jay and the man reach Jay’s house, an assault team is waiting for them near his home. Seeing this, the mysterious man reaches for his phone and proceeds to send something to someone.

This is intercepted by Jay, but he was too late. The message and some video got sent already. Pushing the man out of his Camaro, Jay locked himself in the car as Raavan’s men rained bullets on the man.

In the car, Jay unlocks the man’s phone and sees the video. It is a video of him assisting Raavan during the sniping. And it was sent to a contact named Adithya Sarkaar. He immediately deletes the message, but receives a reply saying “Thank you”.

Jay get’s out of his car and runs to his hacking setup, while the team clear the man and any evidence of him being there. Jay quickly searches for Adithya, and is shocked after reading about him. Panicking, he calls Raavan, while destroying the phone with the evidence.

[Jay]{trembling}: Raavan! Raavan! This guy sent a video of me assisting you during the sniping was shared to someone named Sarkaar.

[Raavan]{calm, but shocked}: Who?

[Jay]{panicking}: Sarkaar! I just read about him. He’s… he’s….

[Raavan]{calm}: Jay! You will be fine. My men will keep a watch on you. You continue living there and attending college. That won’t create any suspicion. Also, did anybody else see you talk to this mysterious man apart from our men?

[Jay]{calming down}: No. Nobody else.

[Raavan]{still calm}: Good. You take of the cartel. Leave him to me.

Jay calms down and returns back to monitoring the cartels’ activities. A single door bell ring told Jay that Raavan’s men had finished the clean up.

Reclining in his chair, Jay looks at a monitor showing the data about his latest search. He shrugs, and looks to the monitor again. He finally reaches out to the remote and switches the view to the cartel’s transport map, uttering under his breath the name: Sarkaar.

Simultaneously, Raavan makes some calls, and relaxes into his comfortable sofa, looking at picture of himself and Jay from the most recent vacation, and utters the name: Sarkaar.
